The S.S. UNITED STATES FOUNDATION is a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to protecting and restoring one of our country’s greatest maritime symbols: the S.S. UNITED STATES – the greatest ocean liner ever built and our national flagship.
William Francis Gibbs dream was to build a passenger ship that was faster, safer and more technologically advanced than anything afloat. The S.S. UNITED STATES was built for United States Lines. She is 992 feet long and is 53,329 tons. In 1952, she crossed the North Atlantic in 3 days, 10 hours and 42 mins, averaging 35.59 knots. (40.96 mph) and still holds the record for a westbound crossing. She could outrun anything afloat and steam non-stop anywhere in the world in less than 10 days.
By the end of the sixties, jumbo jets took their toll on trans-Atlantic superliners. In 1969, she was sent to Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Co. in Newport News, VA. for her annual overhaul. As fate would have it, her boilers were never fired again. After years in Norfolk, she was towed to Turkey where she was stripped with hopes of a refit, which were then unfulfilled, She now awaits her future at a drydock in Philadelphia, PA.
Can we save a part of America’s history, The S.S. UNITED STATES ?
